Doing yoga is great for building strength, flexibility, and balance. It helps you strengthen your body against injury when engaging in all kinds of physical activities.

But it’s possible to push yourself too far during your yoga practice as well. Listening to your body is essential to prevent and avoid injuries. Here are some tips to reduce your risk of injury during your practice.

1) Resist Overexerting Yourself

Overexerting yourself is a common culprit when it comes to injuries. Avoid pushing yourself into a shape your body doesn’t want to go into. If your body is not ready for a pose, you can pause where you feel comfortable.

Yoga is about presence and awareness of how it feels to be in your body. You should feel a nice stretch in many of your yoga poses, but never discomfort or pain.

2) Modifications Are Your Friend

Yoga practice involves meeting your body and yourself where you are, at that moment. If a pose is too difficult, try a modification. Resist the urge to think that modifications mean you’re not doing it right! Whether you’re experiencing knee pain, upper body pain, or lower back pain — there’s always a modification.

3) Take It Slow
