Intro to Yoga Mudras

To understand mudras, the movement of hands in distinct positions used in yoga and meditation, you first need a brief context in its foundation. Eastern traditions for over 3,000 years have paved the groundwork for the incorporation of this mind-body resonance.

First, think of the hand as a gateway to the rest of the body’s ecosystem. Each finger and palm coincide with a region of the body (Note: Body mapping applies to the feet as well). You can find a hand (and foot!) map in any guidebook to reflexology, an alternative healing system, like Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic medicine. Each health practice uses natural ways to heal and balance the body using organic means, like energy alignment and herbology.

In Eastern medicine traditions, the body contains vital energy centers, which run through the body on meridians, north and south routes from the top of the head through all the appendages.

Within the body, there are seven vertically aligned energy meridians called chakras. The chakras have precise locations, starting at the root chakra (near the base of the spine in the pelvic region) up to the crown chakra (top of the skull).
