Meditation Station

Humans have a tendency to overcomplicate things, and we’ve definitely overcomplicated meditation. Needing the perfect meditation spot, the perfect meditation cushion, the perfect meditation chime has gotten in the way of meditation. What if I said you can meditate almost anywhere and almost anytime? What if you didn’t have to look “yogic” or “zen-like” when you meditate? What if meditation could simply be SITTING STILL, BEING, and BREATHING?

Consider that meditation is the pause button to the play button of life. While there are many different forms and techniques of mediation, the practice of closing your eyes and simply being and breathing is a pretty good start. Meditation creates a pause, a space for grace in your thoughts, that pours over into your life. I like to imagine that my morning meditation practice is akin to putting a little bit of peace in my pocket that I can reach for when I need it.

Below is one of my foundational meditation practices, Blue Sky Meditation, based upon a Pema Chödrön quote, “You are the sky. Everything else is just the weather.”

Take a seat, ANY seat.
Close your eyes.
Listen to the cadence of your breath.
Imagine a big, expansive, blue sky mind.
As thoughts, feelings, and emotions arise consider them as weather passing through.
