What is Grounding and What Does Yoga Have to Do With it?

The term grounding can be used to describe a personality trait, a physical sensation and an emotional quality. To feel grounded is to be centered and connected with what’s going on in the present. In contrast, feeling ungrounded can lead to a lack of concentration, difficulty completing tasks or a sense of being emotionally elsewhere.

Physical movement in general is a great way to cultivate a sense of grounding. Practicing yoga asanas can be especially beneficial in helping you to get out of your head and back into your physical body.

In a yoga practice, the term grounding can be used to describe an energetic sensation and / or a physical action. In balancing postures your teacher may instruct you to “ground down” meaning you need to bring awareness into all points of your body that are making contact with the mat. You may also be told to focus your energy down to stay grounded. This means working with your breath and your concentration to stay in the moment and be present in your physical body.
